From CNNMoney.com -- CVS Caremark Corp. (CVS) and Rite Aid Corp. (RAD) have agreed to provide non-English speaking customers in New York with prescription medication instructions in their primary languages, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said Thursday. In a statement, Cuomo said the pharmacy chains will discuss prescription information with customers in their own language and provide written translations in Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Russian, French and Polish.

From Columbia Missourian -- In a classroom nestled within Rock Bridge High School, Junko Oba's students carefully practice their new vocabulary words. The 11 students are starting a new unit in Oba's second-year Japanese class. Japanese was first offered in Jefferson Junior High School, West Junior High School and Hickman High School in 1990 and expanded to Rock Bridge in 1993, said Bob Brady, the foreign language coordinator for Columbia Public Schools.

Indian speakers, she says, often reverse "W" and "V" and, as a result, "heart valve" becomes "heart wow."

From the University Daily Kansan -- The department of African and African-American Studies will start an Amharic language course in Spring 2009 courtesy of a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Amharic is a Semitic language spoken mainly in Ethiopia and parts of Eritrea and Sudan. Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia, and it is spoken by more than 17 million people in the country. Only a few U.S. institutions have Amharic programs.

More than 360 law enforcement agencies — including the Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement — are using SpeechGuard, built by Ectaco, a Long Island, N.Y., company that makes electronic dictionaries and translators.

From the Kaiser network.org -- The Dallas Morning News on Wednesday examined efforts to help foreign-born doctors practicing in North Texas with English-language proficiency to avoid unintended errors in patient communication. Nearly 25% of the 45,500 licensed physicians practicing in Texas received their medical degree from a foreign nation and likely speak English as a second language, according to data from the Texas Medical Board. In 2007, the state medical board handled physicians trained in 83 different foreign nations. About 30%, or 1,032, of the physicians licensed in Texas last year received their medical education at a foreign school, and because the state is facing a physician shortage an effort has been made to attract more foreign physicians to the area, according the Morning News.

From Sofia Echo -- The British Council introduced in early November 2008 a new resource for parents to help their child learn English. Through the online portal LearnEnglish Parents, parents of children who are learning English as a foreign or second language can ask questions, browse topics, learn techniques and download help materials. The British Council has been present in Bulgaria since the 1980s, opening its first official office in the country in 1991.

From MarketWatch -- An immigrant from Liberia, Mahamu Kanneh, was arrested in Rockville, Maryland, for repeatedly raping a 7-year-old child. Last year, his charges were dismissed. The problem was not a lack of evidence. The problem was that the court never found a legal interpreter who spoke Kanneh's African language, Vai.

From WalesOnline -- A WELSH language pressure group last night demanded that a local authority proves it takes its commitment to the language seriously after an employee claimed staff were “afraid” to speak Welsh. Cymuned said Swansea Council should demonstrate its position after an employee told a local radio station he had been challenged for speaking Welsh at work. Swansea Council strongly refuted the allegations.

From New Brunswick Home News Tribune -- The Board of Education plans to discuss Monday, Nov. 10 whether to consider a policy declaring English as the district's official language. The discussion initially began in October when board member Frank Blandino saw signs posted in Spanish at one of the district's elementary schools. Blandino, who also serves as the township's municipal prosecutor, had questioned the signs, saying that English should become the district's official language.

From the Scotsman -- SCIENTISTS at a Scottish university are to analyse parrots, ravens and pigeons in a bid to discover how human language evolved, it was revealed yesterday. The team at St Andrews University say that by comparing "highly intelligent" parrots and ravens with "cognitively normal" pigeons they can discover how human intelligence and language involved.

From the Hindu -- Stung by the Central government’s decision to leave out Malayalam while according ‘classical language’ status to various south Indian languages, the Kerala government has decided to approach the Centre with a ‘statement of facts’ that puts forward the language’s claim to be considered on a par with Kannada and Telugu, which got the coveted ‘classical’ status recently.
