Preparing yourself to be the right person

As far as employment goes it is encouraged to spend some time abroad as a native English speaker. One can gain a vast amount of experience about life, people and culture.

If you have been around the language industry for any length of time, you know that there is far more to do with a second language than teach English and what if that is not what you are gifted to do?

Just consider for a moment all of the potential possibilities. Translator, communications liaison, tour guide and language news editor are just a few possibilities. There are tens of thousands of employment opportunities in the language industry.

Perhaps you are a business owner and you need some internationalization needs fulfilled. What kind of employee will you be looking for?

Keys to finding employment in the language industry

1. Learn a new language – This one single thing opens up many doors of opportunity. Learning a new language not only provides you with another skill for the resume but also shows that you have the aptitude and drive to stick with a project and see it through.

2. Search for opportunities – This may go without saying, but if you look for nothing you will find it every time. Be aware of what is out there and have your hand on the pulse of the industry. There are plenty of websites that offer jobs specific to the language industry.

3. Make sure that your resume is up to date – You never know when the perfect job is going to be available. If your resume is already prepared then that is one less thing you have to do to get ready for the initial contact with potential employers.

4. Grow – There may be a certain industry you are trying to break into. Learn everything you can about it. Read books, study web site and track trends. All of this tinformation will be useful in an interview situation. Not to mention, it will help you stay sharp mentally.

5. Create your own opportunity – Finally, if all else fails, find a need and fill it. It is impossible for every thing in the language industry to be completely discovered. Invent, innovate and improve. Build a better mousetrap.
