Language Advocacy

By: Brian Bruijn

Languages are dying out and some are being destroyed.

News about what is going on is hard to come by. Language articles are starting to crop up if one knows where to look. Too often the voice of the minority gets squelched. Here you will find a section dedicated to to issues that others face when it comes to language advocacy. To truly understand a culture one must learn how that culture communicates.

According to Unesco.org, ten languages die out each year. With all of the technology that we have, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could catalog these dying languages and preserve a history that generations after us may never see?

What can I do?

With the alarming rate that languages are dying out, one may ask, "what can I do?" Here are three recommended thing that you can do right now. Pay attention, speak up and share.

Pay Attention: Watch, read and learn. You do not have to watch or read anything different then you already do. Just by injecting the thought of how does this impact language advocacy into your daily routine, you will start to see how much is overlooked and swept under the carpet.

Speak up: Be willing to say something. Sometimes it may be, what can I do? Other times it may be what can be done? You don't have to change the world but you certainly have the power to change your mind.

Share: Just talking about what you are learning can spark an interest in others. Some will become passionate others will be apathetic. Either way, sharing about what is going on will spark increased awareness and bring some serious wrongs to the forefront.
