Language News

By: Brian Bruijn

It's what's happening in the world of language

Why offer news from other countries and about other languages? If you are not in the field of linguistics or study a language other than the one you learned as a child, you may be wondering what all of the fuss is about.

Let's take for instance that most western speakers of English do not realize that English is the 3rd most spoken language in the world. Mandarin Chinese being first and Spanish a distant second. However, a tunnel vision mentality isn't singularly a western trait. It just goes to show that if people don't take time to grow beyond their surroundings, they are doomed to stagnate.

As the world moves more towards a global economy, it becomes increasingly important to know what is going on in countries other than our own. Learning a language is the best way to understand a culture. However, we cannot learn all of the languages of the world. We can read news about them and in a sense get a feel for how that culture functions and what is important.

Good to know

If someone asked you what Bengali, Wu, or Telugu was would you be able to provide an educated answer? Did you know that there are more people in the world that speak Vietnamese than French?

Many of us will not keep up with the global lingual dynamics of the world. However, when a country commits language genocide or a language dies out because the last native speaker passed on, the world looses an aspect of cultural history that may never be recovered.
