From the Telegraph.co.uk -- This month pupils at Newbury Park Primary School in Redbridge, north-east London, are learning Dutch. Not so unusual, perhaps, but what makes these lessons unique is that the school's star "teacher" is a child herself - 11-year-old Mathumy. This month it's Dutch, but the school's Language of the Month website features 43 languages spoken by children attending the school.

From PR-USA.net -- Translation agency Lingo24 drew a close to its 'Love your Language' competition by granting one lucky participant a European city break for two. The idea behind Lingo24's 'Love your Language' campaign was to celebrate a passion for language coupled with a certain fondness for chocolate.

From Canada.com -- Two decades after Manitoba was forced to recognize French-language rights, francophone leaders say attitudes have changed across the province, and their culture is thriving. Albertans could one day see the same shift at home after a judge earlier this week ruled Alberta's Languages Law is unconstitutional.

Language News

Why offer news from other countries and about other languages? If you are not in the field of linguistics or study a language other than the one you learned as a child, you may be wondering what all of the fuss is about. After all, you may think, this will not have a major impact on my life.

For instance, most western speakers of English do not realize that English is the 3rd most spoken language in the world. Mandarin Chinese being first and Spanish a distant second. However, a tunnel vision mentality isn't singularly a western trait. It just goes to show that if people don't take time to grow beyond their surroundings, they are doomed to stagnate.

As the world moves more towards a global economy, it becomes increasingly important to know what is going on in countries other than our own. Learning a language is the best way to understand a culture. However, we cannot learn all of the languages of the world. We can read news about them and in a sense get a feel for how that culture functions and what is important.

The top five are Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, English, Arabic and Standard Hindi. Is there anything about that list that surprises you? One who was born in America may never have guessed that English was not the number one language in the world. If the person was born in Canada she may never know that French didn't even make the top 10.

The people of this world are becoming increasingly dependent upon one another. While there are challenges that are inherent with people coming together for common goals, there are also certain benefits that cannot be over looked.

We have more opportunity for understanding than any other time in history. With the use of the Internet, we can learn about the differences and establish new relationships based on shared goals. There is ample opportunity to make the world a better place.

ESL TESOL TEFL

English as a Second Language (ESL), Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) are all techniques that people who are fluent in English can use to help others learn to speak, read and write English.

When selecting a teaching style one must consider the audience one desires to reach. ESL is primarily used in a country where English is the dominate language. It is a functional requirement for business, commerce and political activities.

TESOL and TEFL deal with a broader scope of language instruction. While essentially synonyms of each other, the primary focus is to teach English to those who speak other languages. This can be done through a state sponsored curriculum or through private tutoring.
